As holiday trips approach, I would like to share some ideas to help keep your child entertained while on the go.  Plane and train travel in particular offer an opportunity for intimacy and family relationship building; something that can be all too rare in our busy lives. Engaging in travel activities creates a context for laughter and learning to share with your child.

  • As you put together a travel kit for your children, recall that Montessori activities for this age group focus on motor and sensory education, as well as language.

During our Parent/Teacher conferences, many of you were asking about how we deal with temper tantrums here in our classroom, so I would like to expand more on this subject.

Toddlers and tantrums tend to go hand in hand, and it is important to remember that this phase will pass. A temper tantrum is usually a result of the child not being able to effectively express himself verbally, which leads to intense frustration.

Dr. Maria Montessori emphasized the importance of a prepared environment for children to thrive and reach their highest potential.  This environment includes clothing, how the child is dressed.  Appropriate clothing is a developmental aid for psycho-sensory-motor development for young children.  At the same time, it can be a big obstacle for your child's development when he/she is dressed without careful consideration.  But it is very simple as putting the following two ideas in mind when helping dress your child.

Maria Montessori always emphasizes consistency in the environment to help child's healthy development.  If your child is working on the toilet learning process, this is very important.  Any change in daily routine can be an obstacle to your child's learning process.  So please be understanding for frequent "misses" when he/she has unusual events such as having visitor(s), going out for a day, and getting involved in exciting activities.  Even a short time change, let's say 30 min longer night sleep, can disrupt your child's routine.

Recently, we have noticed some aggressive behavior with toddlers, which is normal, but some parents were a little concerned.

As we get ready for our upcoming Art Show, I would like to explain how we see art in a Montessori classroom.

It seems like the developmental stage where our children are at relates to making good choices every day.  Our sweet toddlers can be very strong-willed, be creative in their way (can be unsafe in certain situations), or simply throw a tantrum very easily.  Dr. Maria Montessori mentioned "the birth of will" in toddlers. What it means is that young children, as our toddlers, are just starting to learn to make decisions but they usually don't have enough experience to make good choices. We need to guide them positively to help them develop these skills.
